What does a good CV look like?
Transfer pricing professionals continue to be in demand throughout the world. As TP professionals can come from very diverse backgrounds, it is important to differentiate yourself with a quality CV. It is all very well to list a multitude of achievements over your career but essentially, employers are looking for something that stands out. More and more, this is reflected in the types of TP projects candidates have been involved with and industry specialisation. Here are some sure fire tips to ensure you get that first interview, when a CV is all the employer has to go on.
Detail the projects you have worked on
TP work can generally fall into the following categories:
Documentation and benchmarking
Audit Defence
APAs
Planning (including intellectual property transfers)
Supply Chain Re-engineering
Prepare the work experience component of your CV taking the above project types into account. Include details of the project and your role on the project team in a clear and concise manner. This way, an employer can clearly see where you might fit into an existing team and you can set yourself apart from the competition if you have unique or differentiated project experience that is highly sought after.
Industry Expertise
In increasingly difficult financial times, multinational clients are focusing on core business activities in order to build and maintain a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. As transfer pricing strategy is still seen as a key component to corporate and operational improvement, an advisor with deep industry knowledge can be seen as an important asset to any TP advisory team.
When you are detailing your project experience above, be sure to include the industry sectors you have worked in: oil & gas; consumer products; pharmaceuticals; automotive; telecommunications; and financial services.
Managerial and Mentoring Experience
You may well have been exposed to leading teams, developing business strategy and coaching and mentoring junior staff – make sure you mention this as these skills are highly regarded by employers. With sales and marketing forming a significant part of a TP professional’s skill set in the post Sarbanes-Oxley environment, being able to hit the ground running on the business development front in a new environment or new country, will really appeal to potential employers. Likewise, being able to demonstrate that you have coaching and mentoring skills will also set you apart from other candidates.
Finally, remember not to be too verbose in your detail - keeping your comments short and sharp is the key, but without diluting the message that you are an exceptional candidate with a lot to offer any potential employer. This may be easier said than done and the team at TPI are on hand to assist you with developing a CV that sets you apart from the rest.
